The Oliview Project

The Oliview Project helps build a stronger society by supporting and investing in young people going through the justice system at the Shasta County Probation Department.

Through life skills, hands-on work, learning, and community connections, youth receive essential support as they navigate a difficult time in their lives, work to reenter the community, and build toward a future they can be proud of.

This program provides a unique opportunity for these young people, supporting their reentry and, in some cases, offering ongoing guidance.

The curriculum, developed by Planting Justice, integrates food education with social justice, cultivating belonging, respect, and sustainability.

Learning in the Community

We bring in community leaders—business owners, elected officials, educators, and more—to give the youth a diversity of examples of what it looks like to be a part of our community. These leaders share their experiences, inspiring youth and fostering social literacy. Through these personal connections, youth gain confidence and preparation for reentering the community.

How Youth Benefit

  • Receive support from healthy adults as they navigate challenging years

  • Learn hands-on skills like growing and cooking food

  • Participants receive stipends for their work

  • Cooking, cleaning, and eating together builds life skills

  • Earn worksite learning credits at Shasta College

  • Provide opportunities for feedback to ensure the project meets youth needs

This program has allowed us to see and support participating youth who have already overcome so much, and are willing to go further, trusting people they’ve never met to help them build the future they want and deserve.
